According to Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, the answer is far from clear.

In a recent interview with The New York Times, Amodei acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding AI consciousness.

“We don’t know if the models are conscious. We’re not even sure what it would mean for a model to be conscious, or even if a model can be. But we remain open to the idea that it might be the case.”

He added something even more surprising:

Claude generating statements about discomfort does not prove subjective experience. Large language models predict text based on patterns in massive datasets. When prompted about consciousness, they generate responses consistent with philosophical discourse — not necessarily internal states.

Yet as models grow more advanced, their ability to convincingly simulate introspection will intensify the debate.

If an AI consistently claims uncertainty about its own awareness, society will face a paradox:
